CW 26: Protests in Kenya

June 27:

Protests in Kenya around proposed tax raises
A connection to "Fragile International Financial Systems": The involvement of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Kenya's economic reforms underscores the interconnectedness of global financial systems. The IMF's $4.4 billion support program and its requirements for "fiscal consolidation" demonstrate how international financial institutions can influence national policies, sometimes leading to social unrest.

Planetary Boundaries: The IMF program was partly a response to "devastating cycles of droughts and floods made worse by climate change," highlighting the intersection of economic and environmental concerns.

Let´s remember the demographic situation of Kenya: Demography Kenya, in contrast to e.g. Germany; The protests are led by Gen-Z;

CW 25: Power Outage - Balcan

We learned about power outages on the balcan.

e.g. https://balkaninsight.com/2024/06/21/major-power-blackout-hits-albania-bosnia-croatia-montenegro/

The reasons: Heat, therefore people switch on their cooling devices. In Addition: they try to leave coal, but have not yet set up their alternative systems;

We can see how different patterns come together:

A) planetary boundaries

B) unresolved questions of resources

C) Variables - direct correlation - the more - the more

D) Limited resources - tragedy of the commons

E) Limits of System Stability - tipping points - when quantitative change leads to qualitative change
